Sample Projects
Vulnerability Site Assessment for a Drinking Water System
This project was initiated by the Albuquerque Area Indian Health Service to fulfill the requirements of the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002. Mr. Hakala led the effort that brought together a dozen officials including emergency response personnel, the tribal governor, the tribal planner, the utility operator, and the natural resource officer. The result was a safer and better prepared water supply, treatment, and distribution system for a community of 10,000 people.
Engineering Feasibility Study
This study was initiated and completed within two months to meet federal grant application deadlines. The project engineer collaborated with the tribal administration and the utility operator to develop a preliminary design for major sewer improvements that included an expanded sewer service area and an innovative surface application of treated wastewater for growing hay. This system served the needs of a growing community of nearly 2,000 people.
Water System Modeling and Design
The project engineer designed an improved water system that incorporated new water mains, storage tank, control valves, and remote monitoring. Computer modeling and aerial photography was a necessary part of the design, which covered an area about 10-miles long and provided service to five scattered communities and nearly 3,000 people.
