About Us

About Us

EBSC Engineering provides civil and environmental engineering services to architectural firms, municipal governments, state and federal agencies, tribal organizations, and private developers.

Our greatest interest, however, is in providing engineering support and service to Native communities as they address the challenges of sustainability.

You won't find anything fancy about our firm. What you will find is outstanding people, excellent customer service, and a strong commitment to Alaskan communities.

EBSC Engineering is 100% Native Alaskan owned and managed. We are small, adaptable, and responsive to our clients.

Mission

Our Mission is to effectively build sustainable communities.

Edwin MarkhamWe're all fools until we know that in the common plan,
Nothing is worth the building if it does not build the man.
Why build these temples glorious, if man unbuilded goes?
We build our world in vain, unless the builder also grows.
(Edwin Markham, 1852-1940)

Values

FAMILY -- Healthy families are happier families.
RELATIONSHIPS -- We put people before profits.
HONESTY -- We will not compromise our integrity.
Alaska Native CULTURE -- This defines who we are.
INNOVATION -- This is our approach to solving problems

History

EBSC Engineering was founded by Edward L. Hakala to provide engineering support to Alaskan communities and private developers. Mr. Hakala is a graduate of East Anchorage High School, Brigham Young University (BS), and West Virginia University (MSE). He began his professional career as an Environmental Engineer in Asheville, North Carolina. In 1998 he returned home to Anchorage to work for a local engineering firm as a civil design engineer and project manager.

Mr. Hakala's interest in working more closely with Native communities prompted him to move his family in 2002 to Albuquerque, New Mexico. While working with the Albuquerque Area Indian Health Service, he quickly became the standard bearer in engineering design and project management, thus earning him “Engineer of the Year” status.

Now back in Alaska among family and longtime friends, Mr. Hakala intends to pursue his interest in helping Native communities become better prepared and more self-reliant.

Leadership

You'll find a different brand of leadership at EBSC Engineering. We are creative to the core, visionary, highly adaptable, efficiency-minded, and principle-driven. Plus, we’re good listeners and always interested in your ideas.

Photo Eddie HakalaAt EBSC, we understand the process of change. As a matter of fact, we consider ourselves “agents of change.” As agents of change, we seek to bring out the best in others through effective communication, collaboration, and implementation.

The founder of EBSC, Eddie Hakala, was born and raised in Alaska and is of Inupiat and Finnish descent. His early days of wrestling prepared him for the challenges of college, graduate school, professional engineering, and raising a family. He loves his job and loves working with people.

Interests

People

At EBSC Engineering, our greatest reward comes from building people and communities, not roads and utilities. We believe that every planning and design project is an opportunity to establish a vision and to strengthen community leadership.

Self Reliance

PhotoWe believe that a sustainable community begins with the practice of self-reliant principles in the home. The six facets of self-reliance are career development, resource management, social and emotional strength, physical exercise, literacy and education, and emergency preparedness.

We see it happening in too many places. Local economies are struggling, people are moving to urban centers, and schools are closing.

By implementing the principles of self-reliance, individuals, families, and communities can change the trend.
